Ethnic Heritage Council
The Aspasia Phoutrides Pulakis Award is given annually to an individual who has contributed significantly to a Northwest ethnic community."This year we honor Mary Sherhart. Mary Sherhart is one of America's leading artists in Balkan singing and one of the few non-native artists to be recognized and loved by ethnic audiences. Mary is honored and accepted as a gifted singer in the traditional urban genre of Bosnia and Herzegovina, sevdah. She is the first president of the Sevdah North America, a nonprofit educational organization formed to promote and preserve the traditional urban music of Bosnia and Herzegovina. "In Seattle, Mary has created musical projects that build bridges between East European communities and the general public. She directs the annual Evening of Sevdah, about which the Seattle PI wrote in 2008: 'What was readily apparent was the affection and commitment to this music from the excellent singers and instrumentalists, either having been born in the region, or with ethnic roots, or for the sheer love of the music itself.'" Mary Sherhart always includes a strong message of finding one's passion in life and the joy and healing of music. She excels at building bridges through the shared joy of music, overcoming political differences in the Balkan community, bringing Serbs, Bosnians, Croatians, Bulgarians, Macedonians, and Americans together to share the universal joy of music.
Artist Fellowship in Traditional Arts Category
Artist Trust / Washington State Arts Commission
Fellowships are a monetary award given to practicing professional artists of exceptional talent and demonstrated ability. The Fellowship is a merit-based, not a project-based award. Recipients present a Meet the Artist Event to a community in Washington State that has little or no access to the artist and their work.
